THE JOYFUL NOISE
WHEATLAND UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
March 2017

NOTES FROM THE PASTOR.......

Dear Friends,

The Lenten Season (March 1-April 15) is upon us. The 40 days of Lent (not counting Sundays) is a spiritual journey we all need to take. The journey of Lent is a powerful season in the life of the church. Lent is a season of repentance. This is a time of fasting, self-examination, and reflection.

In this season, we prepare ourselves for Easter. During Lent, we reflect on our relationship with God, add in a spiritual practice, or volunteer, all as a way to draw nearer to God and trust in God’s grace. Lent is a journey from death to resurrection.

The Lenten sermon series is entitled: “The Promises of God.” I hope you will be in church during the Lenten season to hear these sermons.

Call me if you need me! (I don't text!)
Jim Welch

FAITH FELLOWSHIOP
We are always in need of persons to supply snacks and cookies and
volunteers to serve as monthly liturgist, ushers, felloswhip
coordinators and communion stewards. If you can please put your name
on the sign-up sheet in the Fellowship Hall.

**Please remember to write down any meetings, gatherings, etc. on the
calendar in the Fellowship Hall so nothing is forgotten,

Come join our BIBLE study

"Jesus -- The servant" is the new Bible study that will be led
by Rev. Welch beginning on February 5th at 5:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall.

The study will be looking at the "servant" roles Jesus had according to the
Gospel of Mark.

Those roles include:
a. The servant of his people.
b. The servant of the Lord.
c. The messianic/prophetic servant.
d. The suffering servant and risen Lord.

Participants will use their Bibles that they feel comfortable taking notes in.
A textbook will not be used. If you are interested in being part of the Bible
study, please call the church office at 322-3899.

FUELED BY COFFEE AND JESUS
Did you know that the UMW provides all of the delicious coffee
and tea that we enjoy during Fellowship Hour and other activities
at the church? We get these items from the Free Trade catalog,
which is one of the charities supported by the national UMW
organization. Lately, we've had some folks ask if they could buy
the coffee. We decided to offer packages of some of the free trade
items for sale, at a small mark-up, during fellowship hour, as one
of the UMW's fund raising efforts. If you like this coffee, watch
for marked packages to be available, as soon as we get our new
supplies. The catalog also includes chocolate (remember the large
chocolate bars we had for sale last year?), green tea, and more.
If you're interested in such supplies, see WillaJean to look at
the catalog.

PROJECT PATRICIA the cut components you have or will do for Project Patricia. Currently,
there are a few packages that need to be cut and brought back by March
7th to be forwarded to the Kansas City, Kansas church.
--Rowann S. - Co-Chair Project Patricia

THANK YOU!

Thank you to everyone who celebrated my 80th birthday with your good wishes,
cards, and 300 pairs of girl’s and women’s undies! Your gifts to the Project
Patricia Mission outreach makes it possible for the church in Kansas City,
Kansas, to complete 300 hygiene kits to be taken to several countries in Africa.
With gratitude for reaching for the 300 pairs of undies you gave to mission
outreach, my sincere Thank You! --Gene S.

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN
The United Methodist Women (UMW) met on February 9, 2017, for a bring-your-own
lunch and program, followed by our business meeting. Karyl Webb presented a
short discussion of two of the books she has read recently for the reading
program. The group talked about those and the program’s purpose and focus.
After lunch, the group heard reports and did planning for Gene’s S.’s 80th
birthday party on Feb. 19 and the Fat Tuesday Pancake Supper on Feb. 28.
They were reminded of the invitation we received from the Torrington UMW
for their annual Friendship luncheon on Feb. 25. Attendees from here will
carpool, provided the weather cooperates. The annual kitchen clean-up was
set up for March 14th at 9:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome to help us do that.
Karyl will provide lunch. As usual, many hands make light work, so if you
can spare the time, please join us in cleaning our kitchen and storage area.
Kathy W. will be participating in the next Wyoming District Task Force
conference call on Feb. 27. She will relay the group’s request for the
District’s activities and for good communication. We have received our
shipment of free-trade coffee, and are working on a fund-raiser activity
to provide free-trade products to the congregation for sale. WillaJean will
contact the folks who provide the catalog for their fund-raising guidelines
and get back to us.

During the Project Patricia meeting on Feb. 7th, Rowann S. and her helpers
packed up box 43 and sent it to the Kansas church folks. The group set up
the kits for the “Cut-Ups” to take home, cut out, and return before March 7,
the next Project Patricia session. They used up almost all the fabric we have
in stock, but since then we’ve received more fabric from Marge at the Thrift
Store, so we’re back in business. Our thanks to the two ladies, Kathy L. and
Marge G., who took the five bags of fabric home and washed it for us.

All ladies of the church are invited to attend any of these events. We need
all the help we can get to carry out the activities UMW does at WUMC and in
our community. If you need a ride to any of these events, please call Kathy W.
